MX Sound News
#2. Jan 28th 2006
FTR-MX Seminole
By Tom Fleming On Saturday FTR held voluntary sound testing that was held from 3:00
PM to 4:00 PM in a marked off space according to the SAE standards for
stationary motorcycle testing.
Out of the 201 riders signed up on Saturday, only 17 riders offered
their machines for sound testing. Only 9% of the riders there made the
journey over to be tested. Out the 17-tested, 6-failed.
After the closure of the sound testing we had a late arrival looking
to be tested. With the area already dismantled we could not conduct an
official test. We discussed the sound db level issues and did perform
an “off the record test” that resulted in an un-official “did
not pass” result.
The good news is there are 18 more riders that understand the situation
and know there will be mandatory testing, and that they will have to
comply with the 98db for the 2007 up coming MX season. It is important
to know that now is not the time to run out and purchase a new FTR legal
exhaust system. Wait until later this summer as the exhaust system manufacturers
settle in and build more compliant systems. The manufacturers are working
to lower the db levels that will produce the extra horsepower you want.
Be careful, you will find the cost coming down on the louder exhaust
systems that are not selling due to higher db levels. Make sure you know
what db level you are purchasing.
Currently the motocross division has two sound testers out of a team
of 5 that have training. We had the opportunity to allow for the rest
of our team to get some hands on training and we extend a special “thank
you” to the 17-riders for their patients and the extra time taken
to allow for our team to get some experience with the sound equipment.
The FTR executive committee has a now mandated that there would be mandatory
sound testing at the next FTR MX round #6, which will be held on February
19th. Because of the Waldo cancellation round #6 is being ran at Quick
Track, Lakeland, FL. There will be mandatory sound testing for
the 250A, Youth 16-24 and the PW 7-9 class Saturday afternoon and Sunday
morning.
If you ride the 250A, Youth 16-24 or the PW 7-9 class, when you go to
sign up you will be given a card, before you are able to complete sign
up; you will have to have your motorcycle sound tested. The card will
be signed off by the sound official at the testing site. Pass
or fail you will be able to sign up and ride once the motorcycle has
been tested! You must have your motorcycle tested to ride
any of these classes or you will not be able to sign up. |
