Ocala National
Forest Volunteer Ranger Program
OK ...it's time to go to work. I have
spoken to both District Rangers in
the Ocala NF and they both have interest in the Volunteer Ranger Program.
I'm going to shorten it to VRP because I am tired of typing it out each
time. Jim Thorsen is ready for us to put the program back into place in
the Seminole District. The Lake George area is on hold for now but Jeri
is willing to do something later.
We had 31 terrific folks go thru the VRP last spring with about half of
you who spent time in the forest. I need to set a schedule over the next
few days and see who of you are willing to spend and commit to at least
ONE day a month in the forest as a VR. For those out there who wish to
get involved, let me know and we will set up another VR Orientation
Training day soon. Remember, we need a commitment of at least ONE day per
month over the next 7 or 8 months. You can do this as a club ride or hook
up with a couple other VR's and help out the USFS and ourselves. The USFS
cannot do all that is required to maintain the forest for us, so we will
have to fill in assist when and where we can.
I hope we get an overwhelming response to this so we can show the USFS
that we are serious about preserving the natural resources of OUR forest.
Those of you who volunteered last spring, everything is the same. Check
out the calendar and see what day you are available. I realize that it
will be hard for most of us to do much during the holidays. But at the
same time just imagine what a great way to spend a Sat or Sun in December
than riding thru millions of Christmas trees.
Let me know if you plan on once again volunteering or if you wish to get
involved this fall and spring.
Thanks, Carl Reiche
