To: Dan George, Florida Trail Riders From: David Norman Re- USFS Roadless Area Conservation Proposed Rule Meeting 06/01/00 The meeting was pretty tame it was over by 8:00. We were severely outnumbered. Some highlights were: Roadless areas can have motorized vehicle trails New trails can be constructed. (just no new roads) Timber can be harvested (remember, timber cutting is good, no timber cutting no access) In the southeast we were not treated so bad The guys out west will have a problem. I feel this a the scan of designating these areas wilderness. I recommend we get this comment information out to The membership- The USES recommended that in our comments give a valid reason or an alternative to support our position. Most of the crowd in the meeting seemed to feel that the proposal did not go far enough My comments will be that limiting the public's access to its lands is never a good thing. Vehicle access can be managed so it does not adversely impact the forest. I would Mew see road construction in inventoried roadless areas done on a limited basis using local input and planning. It is important to be able to access some of these lands for timber harvests and recreation. The amount of acreage available to the public for these uses is dwindling The next meeting will be the end of June at the same location The USFS will take verbal comments then All comments have to be received in Salt Lake City by July 17,2000.
