Virgin Gator Hare Scramble
September 9&10 2000
By Lane Sheppard

Friday afternoon I figured it was time to take a look at the course since I hadn't seen it after the first set up weekend. Three other clubs members agreed to ride ahead at a good pace and point out spots that might need an arrow from my bag. After the first mile I thought I had made a mistake by not wearing goggles until I got to the two-mile mark. The first section of the course was open pasture allowing passing from the start so it was a little dusty. At two miles the course turned into oak and palm hammocks where that dark dirt gives you those great power wheelies after seemingly dragging the bar in the tight corners. I'm thinking, this is truly a great course Hubert.

Saturday morning came early with a grave concern that the Port-O-Johns still had not arrived and rain clouds were in the area. A quick call to my wife to pull some strings, who was out of town herself, netted a call from the good folks at Comfort House and six units on the way. God save the Queen. Back to the matters of sign up and I watched as the pre enter line got longer than the post line. Guess that ten bucks hit home to more riders this year. As the hours mounted still more clouds came rolling in as rain began to fall during practice and the riders meeting. From the way I remembered the course, a little rain was OK, several inches was not. Well it basically rained all day. You gotta thank those ATV guys for flattening the course out as the ruts started taking shape. Still scoring went well and we retired to the PeeWee track under the oak canopy near the parking area for the last races. I heard lots of great comments on the course for the Peewee's thanks to Blake and Dorsey.

Sunday morning came even earlier but the rain was gone. The amount of rain on Saturday called for some last minute changes by the course crews and some water proofing by the riders. The AA line at twelve o'clock was full of the best FTR series riders from the last several years including; Mike Phillips, champ Dusty Morgan, and the rest of the FTR hot shoes. At the finish it was none other than Paul Seburn with his first Highpoint, pulling a rabbit out of his hat in front of Dusty followed by Kyle McAfee.

Trophies were handed out by four o'clock as the club detailed what little trash was left. Special thanks to the ranch of Norman Fore and family as they tried their first event of many we hope to come to. He said he would not have believed so many people could come to his ranch for two days and leave so orderly with hardly a trace. FTR, you're still the best.
