Godspeed, Donnie Wellborn

Services were held today for Donnie Wellborn in Sumter, South Carolina. Donnie is the father of AA enduro rider Trey Wellborn and was killed in a traffic accident while returning home from Bike Week this past Sunday.

Mr. Wellborn was traveling near Brunswick, GA at approximately 30 mph when the car in front of him suddenly slammed on the brakes. Donnie slammed on the brakes but apparently didn't think he could stop. He cut to the left lane and the saddlebag of his bike clipped the rear bumper of the car. That caused him to "high side," resulting in him being thrown into the median. He was killed by the impact.

Donnie used to ride back in the 70's and early 80's, and did fairly well, attaining A class status. He owns Town and Country Modular Homes in Sumter, where he worked with his daughter Candice and Trey. His wife's name is Jan.

You always expect deaths around Daytona Bike Week, but you never expect it to be someone you know. Donnie loved motorcycles and passed that passion on to Trey at a very young age. Trey began riding at age 2. Although Donnie didn't ride dirt bikes anymore, he was certainly a big helper in all of SERMA's events. He will be missed.

Please keep Trey and his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
