Hand/Brush Guards? Non-Wrap-around results?

I've always used full wrap-a-round hand guards - so I'm looking for input from those that use the Flag (non-wrap-around) type.

I know the full wraps have saved my hands and levers in the past, but I'm considering the other style for EVO on the more open Saturday course.

Good or bad decision to go with the lesser protection for hands and levers?
